Is Kenya or Tanzania better for safari? Now that is a hard question! The answer very much depends on what sort of safari experience you’re after.
In these African gems and mesmerizing lands, at the right time of year (September and October) we witness the great migration and go in search of The Big Five in some beautiful locations including Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. The gently rolling plains will take you far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
To decide whether Kenya or Tanzania is better for safari let’s look at what each country has to offer.
Safaris in Kenya
To begin with you’ve got the headline act of Kenyan Safaris – the Maasai Mara. An area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, the Maasai Mara is famous for being one of the best wildlife viewing destinations in East Africa.
It is one of only a few places on earth to have a premier conservation status, meaning wildlife and their ecosystem are highly protected here. At 1,510 square kms, it is home to around 600 species of bird and over 95 species of mammal.
The Maasai tribe are the nomadic inhabitants of the area and ‘Mara’ is their word for spotted, the area has this name thanks to the shrubs, bushes and flat topped acacia trees that dot the landscape.

We can’t talk about Kenya without mentioning the lakes and national parks in this beautiful land. Home to diverse wildlife including iconic flamingoes, the breathtakingly beautiful vistas will provide an unforgettable experience. Lakes and national parks we can visit include Nakuru, Naivasha, Baringo and Bogoria. Naivasha National Park.

In southern Kenya you’ll find the Amboseli National Park. Home to large elephant herds and the most incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania. Vast plains and swamps inhabited by giraffes, zebras and cheetahs plus hundreds of bird species can be found here.

Almost the size of Wales, the protected plains of Laikipia are home to half of Kenya’s Black Rhino population. They’re joined by wild dogs, Grevy’s Zebra and thousands of elephants. The crowds are still yet to flock to Laikipia creating a truly unique and distinctly private safari experience.

Safaris in Tanzania
If we’re trying to decide if Kenya or Tanzania is better for safari we have to talk about the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. Sitting in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, it is the largest, intact volcanic caldera on earth thought to be over two million years old. The crater has become a natural sanctuary for many large mammals in Africa and The Big Five can be found here.

And of course the one everyone has heard of, the Serengeti.
One of Tanzania’s most famous National Parks, the Serengeti is known for the Great Migration of zebra, wildebeest and antelope, to name just a few of the herds that pass through the plains. This legendary land is a vast mass of untouched African wilderness that will take your breath away and stop you in your tracks.
